Saturday class 5&6th grade lesson plan description

The lesson taught was based on raising environmental awareness through visual art.

The model involves three separate learning tasks, The first task introduced the ideas and students researched an endangered animal and the risks it faces. The students then were introduced to the concept of hybridization and how to use the concept to create solutions to the issues endangering the animals of their choice. The second component of the lesson involved creating a 3-D model of their hybrid animal using kiln-fired clay. The final component of the lesson involved the creation of painted backdrops and museum display cards based on the paradigm found in natural hsitory museums.

5&6th-grade lesson plan rationale.

The main focus of this unit of the lessons involves creating a multimedia display based on research and comprized of a three-dimensional ceramic hybrid animal, a painted backdrop environment and a text-based museum card. The students were introduced to ceramic artists and illustrators whose work involves issues of hybridization. Artists Nicholas Di Genova and Kate MacDowell's work involves the creation of hybrid forms, we used this to foster discourse about why the artists created their animals and how the students interpreted these choices.

5&6th grade day one

The class took their seats and we began with an icebreaker exercise, Two questions were printed on a slip and placed at every seat. The students then went around the room and introduced themselves by the name they wished to be called and named their favorite animal. The students were then shown a powerpoint introducing the concepts, and artists in the unit. The presentation included question prompts. These prompts were used to encourage discourse and create both teachers to pupal interaction and student to student. interaction.

The students were given brainstorming worksheets and research materials to create their hybrids. This allowed students to have agency throughout the lesson. by choosing animals to which they shared an affinity they were personally motivated to research creative hybrid solutions to climate change threats.

The students designed animal hybrids and were introduced to the vocabulary surrounding environmentalism. The students' designs were reviewed and the next step in the lesson was demonstrated. The vocabulary and technique for ceramic construction were shown to the students in order to foster an understanding of proper technique. Pinch pot hollow construction was shown to students and informed their finished designs.

5&6th grade day two

Our second day involved student creation of their hybrid forms. The class was engaged in discourse in order to review the previous lessons' knowledge. The discussion revealed the students retained the information presented to them and were able to incorporate this into practical designs for their hybrids. The students showed retention of information by demonstrating an understanding of the technique in creating hollow vessels for larger components of their pieces. I encouraged students to share information and ask questions of me and one another.

The next component of the lesson was introduced after work time was completed. This involved a powerpoint presentation introducing artists who work with ideas of display and diorama. Debra BrozWalter Martin, and Paloma Munoz all create work based on the aspects of display within the confines of the diorama.
