Description- On November 30th 2017 at The Art Institute of Chicago, I attended a gallery talk led by Lucas Livingston. The talk was to introduce a new exhibit, City ad Country: Woodblock Prints of Early 20th Century Japan.
This exhibit highlights the work of Japanese printmakers using the traditional woodblock printmaking techniques. These artists documented the tensions arising between the placid life in the countryside of rural Japan, and the new dynamic cities emerging as important sources of economic and technological growth.
Rational-The presentation was a fascinating glimpse into pre war Japan, and the tensions between a traditional culture emerging into the 20th century on the brink of unpresented destruction. This talk was a perfect illustration of how art and history combine to create a narrative that enriches the understanding of pivotal moments in human history.

Description- On September 17 and 19th 2017 I participated as a volunteer at the Bradley House in Kankakee IL, at a watercolor painting workshop sponsored by The Community Arts Council. The event featured Painter Jan Bolete and accommodated 30 students.
Rational- I was involved in the setting up of the space, which included the lighting, and technology to allow the students to view the demonstrations clearly and in real time. Having to make learning accessible in less than favorable studio conditions was a wonderful problem solving exercise which will be useful in other class room environments.
