Pals 2 Fall 2019

I have worked with many community organizations and one of my favorites is the Boys and Girls club. This image is from a lesson inspired by artists Howardena Pindell, her work deals with identity and race as well as memory and process. For this lesson students worked with circles punched from past works, Pindell’s work references the past by using her previous works as a basis for new collages. The students created new, person pieces from past works.

Another community organization where I have taught is Western Avenue Community Center. The lesson in this photo is based on creating simple landscape abstractions using color to convey the essence of the image. The painter Alma Thomas’s work was the inspiration for this lesson, the kids began to understand the concept of abstraction and use color in evocative ways to interpret the landscape images.
